Which Flow Rope Should You Start With? The Complete Weight Guide

The short answer: most adults should start rope flow with a 12 mm rope around 450 grams. It is light enough to learn timing without fighting the rope, and heavy enough that you can feel where it is. If you already train and want one rope that does skill work and light conditioning, start at 550 to 650 grams. If you are here for strength, your first heavy rope should be around 1 kg, not more. New to the practice entirely? Start with What Is Rope Flow?
- Brand new to rope flow: California Orange 12 mm, 450 g ($79) or any 12 mm below
- Athletic, want one do-everything rope: The OG 14 mm, 550 g ($89) or the Red Wolf 16 mm, 650 g ($99)
- Coming for strength work: Black Shark 1,050 g ($165) after a few weeks on a lighter rope

Why weight is the whole question
A flow rope teaches your body to rotate, shift weight, and coordinate both hands through figure-eight patterns. The rope's weight decides what you learn. A light rope gives you speed and timing but forgives sloppy positions. A heavy rope slows everything down and makes your shoulders, grip, and trunk do honest work, but it punishes you if your pattern is not there yet.
That is why the answer is a ladder, not a single rope. Our whole brand is named for this idea: Milo of Croton carried a calf every day until he was carrying a bull. You do not start with the bull.
One honest note our customers keep making: Winding Ropes run thick and soft for their size. As Yarden Z. put it in a verified review, "12mm feels more like 14mm in a regular marine rope." Keep that in mind if you are coming from another brand.
A note on tolerances: these ropes are handmade, so weights are nominal rather than exact. The 12 mm ropes run roughly 440 to 460 grams, and we quote 450 g as the standard. Twenty grams either way makes no practical difference to how a rope flows.
The weight ladder
Step 1: Learn the patterns (440 to 460 grams, 12 mm)
This is the starting weight for almost everyone. Enough mass to feel the rope orbit, light enough to practice for 20 minutes without your forearms giving out.
- California Orange 12 mm, 450 g, $79
- Purple Haze 12 mm, 450 g, $75
- Bubblegum Pink 12 mm, 450 g, $75
- Rope Doe (random colour, best price), $64
- The Rope Down Under 12 mm, 450 g, $79
"I have purchased four flow ropes. The two I brought from windingropes are my favorite. I love the weight and it's not stiff like one of the other ones I bought."
Judy B., verified 5-star review, Purple Haze 12 mm
Step 2: The daily driver (550 to 650 grams, 14 to 16 mm)
Once the figure eight, dragon roll, and sneak feel smooth, a little more weight adds feedback and light conditioning. Many experienced flowers live here forever.
- The OG 14 mm, 550 g, $89. The original Winding Rope.
- Bomber 14 mm, 550 g, $89
- KushChief Signature 14 mm, 550 g, $89
- Red Wolf 16 mm, 650 g, $99. The bridge between flow and heavy.
"Great product and love the weight and feel of the Red Wolf. If you are interested in taking your fitness culture to the next level of suppleness and fluidity of movement, you have got to get a rope from Winding Ropes."
Luther P., verified 5-star review, Red Wolf 16 mm
Step 3: First heavy rope (870 to 1,050 grams)
Heavy rope flow is where the practice turns into real strength work for your grip, shoulders, and trunk. Start near 1 kg. Sets get shorter, rest gets longer, and your light rope suddenly feels like a toy. More on what changes in Rope Flow with Heavy Ropes.
- Orange Shark 20 mm, 870 g, $125. Our softest heavy rope.
- Black Shark premium handles, 1,050 g, $165
"A very comfortable rope for me, and looks amazing. The additional thickness and fantastic color make it really pop on camera. It almost looks like it is glowing. Probably my favourite rope at the moment."
Wayne, verified 5-star review, Orange Shark 870 g

Step 4: Strength territory (1.25 to 1.5 kg)
- Black Panther 24 mm, 1.25 kg, $145
- Purple Ape 24 mm, 1.4 kg, $179
- Great White Shark, 1.5 kg, $179. The pioneer of our heavy series.
"I started with an 800g rope which became too easy very quickly. Moving to the 1.5kg is the perfect step up in size."
Izaak S., verified 5-star review, Great White Shark 1.5 kg
Step 5: Advanced heavy (2.4 to 3 kg)
These are slow, deliberate ropes for practitioners with months of heavy work behind them. The best gatekeeping advice we have seen comes from a customer who made the jump:
"It was a big jump to go up to 3kg from 800g. I'd only recommend a rope of this weight if like me you can do 10-15 minutes with something like the Ghost Shark without feeling very sore at all, and you are fairly tapped into using everything in your body to move the rope. Not just your upper body and arms! If you don't quite fit that description you should go for a lighter heavy rope like 1.5 - 2kg. One last thing: this rope is far more flexible than it looks and it's very soft to the touch."
Lachlan N., verified 5-star review, Gorilla 3 kg, after a year on the Ghost Shark
- Black Shark 36 mm, 2.4 kg, $315
- Super Orange Shark 36 mm, 2.4 kg, $330
- Gorilla 40 mm, 3 kg, $345 (also in purple)
The summit: pararopes (1.6 to 5 kg)
Pararopes are our softest heavy format, a different feel from the braided sharks. The 1.9 kg ($225) is the entry point; the 5 kg Pararope ($395) is the heaviest rope we make.
Kids
Kids get their own ladder: the Red 8 mm, 130 g ($49), the Yellow 10 mm, 200 g ($59), and the 12 mm, 370 g ($66), or all three in the Mini Milo Pack ($110). More ideas in Fun Family Fitness Activities at Home.

Heavy flow ropes are not battle ropes
This trips up almost everyone coming from a gym background. A battle rope is anchored to a wall and you slam it. A heavy flow rope is one continuous, soft, braided rope with capped ends that you swing around your body in flowing patterns. It rolls, folds, and travels with you. If you have seen our ropes carried folded over a shoulder, that is the format. For why heavier swings help nearly everyone, read Heavy Rope is Better for Every Body that Swings a Rope.
The shortcut: progressive packs
If you already know you will progress, the packs are the best value per rope:
- 3 Flow Ropes Pack: 450 g + 550 g + 800 g, $205
- 3 Weights Progressive Pack: 450 g + 1 kg + 1.25 kg, $270
- 2 Heavy Ropes Pack: 1 kg + 1.25 kg, $210
"Having mostly only ever used one rope previously, I am absolutely loving the variety of ropes I now use. Whilst the red wolf is my go to preferred size and weight, the ghost shark has been an amazing addition adding a whole new dimension to my flow. And I love the bomber for my cardio rope practice."

Common questions
What weight rope should I start rope flow with?
A 12 mm rope around 450 grams. It is the weight we hand people at our Melbourne workshops, and the weight that lets you practice long enough to actually learn. See what a session looks like in the Carlton Gardens workshop recap.
What is the best heavy rope for a beginner?
The first heavy rope should be 870 grams to 1 kg, like the Orange Shark or Black Shark. Jumping straight to 2 kg or more usually means bad patterns under load and a rope that ends up in the closet.
Can I start with a heavy rope?
You can, if you accept a slower start. If you are strong but new to the movement, the Red Wolf at 650 g is the honest compromise: enough weight to feel like training, light enough to learn with.
Is a flow rope the same as a jump rope?
No. You never jump over a flow rope. It is a weighted rope you swing in patterns around your body, closer to a soft club or a ribbon than a skipping rope. Full explanation: What Is Rope Flow?
What rope for kids?
The kids line starts at 130 grams with shorter lengths and smaller handles, running 130 g, 200 g and 370 g. The Mini Milo Pack covers ages and stages with three progressive weights.
Do the weights vary between ropes?
Slightly, because they are handmade. The 12 mm ropes run roughly 440 to 460 grams and we quote 450 g as standard. Twenty grams either way does not change how a rope flows.
What do customers say about starting and progressing?
We publish unedited customer experiences by topic: shoulders, joints and mobility, grip and forearms, and starting with an injury history.
