How to Use a Metronome for Rope Flow, and Why It Works

A metronome does two different jobs in a rope flow practice, and most people only ever use it for one of them.

Job one is pacing. When your practice has quietly become comfortable, a beat set slightly faster than you are moving drags you back to the edge of what you can do.

Job two is encoding. The beat adds a second channel of information to the same movement, and it teaches you to anticipate rather than react.

Both are in the Rope Flow 101 ebook, which is where this article comes from. If counting out loud is new to you, read count out loud first, because your voice comes before the machine.

Job one: the metronome as a pacer

Here is the line from the ebook: "When a person starts to be out of focus or the practice is somehow easy or boring, a metronome can be used as a pacer to reach higher speeds."

Boredom is information. It usually means the difficulty has drifted below your current level, and you have started practising something you already own. There is a name for the fix: desirable difficulty, a term from Robert Bjork's work on learning. The short version is that conditions which make practice feel harder and slower in the moment often produce better long-term retention, and conditions that make practice feel smooth often produce worse.

A metronome is one of the cheapest desirable difficulties available. It does not let you settle.

The ebook sits this next to a line from Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi's Flow: "The best moments in our lives are not the passive, receptive, relaxing times... the best moments usually occur if a person's body or mind is stretched to its limits in a voluntary effort to accomplish something difficult and worthwhile." That is the same idea arriving from a different direction. The edge is where the interesting part happens, and the beat is how you find the edge on purpose.

Setting the tempo from your own numbers

Do not guess a BPM. Derive it:

  1. Count your clean repetitions in 20 seconds. One pattern, the one you are working on, as many good reps as you can hold.
  2. Multiply by three. That is your current cadence in repetitions per minute.
  3. Set the metronome there first, one repetition per beat, and confirm you can hold the pattern to it.
  4. Then add 2 to 5 BPM. That is your working tempo. It should feel slightly rushed and still be clean.
  5. Retest in two weeks, not two days.

To put that in range: our published beginner reference for an Overhand Figure 8 is 10 to 14 clean reps in 20 seconds, which is 30 to 42 repetitions per minute. Intermediate is 16 to 22, which is 48 to 66. Those numbers are reference points from our own coaching, not standards, and yours are the only ones that matter. The rule that keeps this useful: when the pattern shape degrades, the tempo is wrong. A fast number with a broken figure 8 is not a faster figure 8, it is a different and worse movement.

The same movement, two rope weights, one afternoon

Here is what that looks like measured, using footage Pablo filmed of himself in 2020, years before any of this was written down.

Two clips. Same room, same overhand matador, fourteen minutes apart. The only thing that changes is the rope. The metronome is on screen at the start of each one.

First, at 13:50: the 1.5 kg rope. Metronome set to 152, marked Vivace.
Then at 14:04, same spot: the 1 kg rope. Metronome set to 196, marked Presto.

How to read those two numbers

Each time the rope touches the floor is one beat of the metronome. A matador is two beats per side, so one full pattern is four beats. That converts the tempos into patterns:

Fifty percent more rope cost twenty-two percent of the tempo. Same body, same movement, same afternoon, fourteen minutes apart.

That is the whole argument for rope weight as the progression variable, and for the beat as the thing that measures it. Your working tempo is not a number you choose. It is a number the rope hands you, and it moves when the rope does.

Job two: the beat as a second channel

This is the part almost nobody uses a metronome for, and it is the more interesting half.

From the ebook: "Adding the sound and the rhythm are 2 extra connections to the same task we are performing. The more connections we have, the more retention we will get as result."

You are performing one movement, but you are now taking it in through your hands, your eyes and your ears at once. More routes to the same thing generally means it is easier to get back to later. That principle has a name in learning research, dual coding, and it is the same reason counting out loud works.

Then there is anticipation, which the ebook names directly: "Another part of rhythm is the anticipation sense, knowing exactly when the beat is going to happen and adapt our moves to that, so they match as much as possible."

That sentence is the whole difference between a beginner and someone who looks smooth. A beginner responds to where the rope is. Someone further along has already decided where the rope will be, and arrives there with it. A steady external beat is the fastest way we know to install that, because a metronome is perfectly predictable in a way a rope is not.

Which one should you use, the metronome or your voice?

They are not competing. They are ordered.

Voice first, while the movement is still being built. Metronome second, once it is stable enough to be pushed. Using a metronome on a pattern you have not learned yet mostly teaches you to rush a shape you do not own.

Practical notes

  • Any metronome app works. The one in the ebook is Soundbrenner, which is free and has a wearable that buzzes the beat rather than playing it, which is genuinely better outdoors where you cannot hear a click over traffic.
  • Music with a hard, constant beat is a decent substitute, as long as the tempo really is constant. Most songs are.
  • Map the beat to the rope, not to your arms. As in the clips above, one floor contact is one beat. That gives you an unambiguous thing to hit.
  • Do not run the metronome for a whole session. Use it for a block, then take it off and see whether the tempo survived without it. That is the actual test.

What we are not claiming

Desirable difficulty and dual coding are established ideas in learning research, and both were studied mostly on people learning verbal material rather than people learning movements. The anticipation point is well supported in motor control generally, but the specific claim that a metronome is the best way to build it in rope flow is our coaching experience, not a study.

The two tempo numbers above are one person on one afternoon, which is a demonstration rather than a study. We publish it because it is checkable: the metronome is on screen, the movement is countable, and you can run the same test on yourself this week.

Should I use a metronome or count out loud?

Both, in order. Count out loud while you are learning a pattern, because your voice also fixes your breathing and travels with you. Bring in the metronome once the pattern is stable and you want to push the tempo.

Can I just use music instead?

Yes, provided the tempo is genuinely constant. The value is in a predictable beat you can anticipate, and most recorded music gives you that.

How do I know the tempo is too fast?

When the shape of the pattern degrades. A higher number with a broken figure 8 is not a faster figure 8, it is a worse movement. Drop the tempo until the shape returns.

Should I use a metronome every session?

No. Use it for a block, then remove it and see whether the tempo holds on its own. That is the test of whether anything was actually learned.
