Chunking and the Cardinal Points: Why One Movement Becomes Four

The way we teach rope flow, you picture yourself facing South, East, West and North. The same figure 8 keeps running while you turn your body around it. One movement becomes four, and the gaps between them become your transitions.

People assume the cardinal points are about orientation. They are not, really. They are a memory system, and they happen to be a well chosen one. This article is about why, and about the one mistake the research suggests you should avoid when breaking down a skill.

What a chunk is

In 1956 George Miller published a paper you have probably heard referenced without knowing its name, The Magical Number Seven, Plus or Minus Two. Its lasting contribution was not really the number. It was the idea of the chunk: your working memory holds a small number of units, but you get to decide how much is packed inside each one.

The example that makes it click is chess. A beginner looking at a board sees thirty-two pieces. A master looking at the same board does not see thirty-two of anything. They see a handful of familiar configurations, each one a single unit. Same board, same working memory limit, completely different amount of information held.

Skill is largely the business of building bigger chunks.

The cardinals as the base you build on

Here is what I wrote in the Rope Flow 101 ebook, before I had read a word about any of this:

"In rope practice we have the cardinals as our base (long term memory) for adding new more specific tasks (short term) over them, using it as a base for growing."

That is chunking described from the inside. The figure 8 becomes one unit rather than a list of instructions about thumbs and elbows and timing. Once it is one unit, you have room in your head to add something on top of it: a direction, a transition, a step.

If you are still thinking about your hands, the pattern is not a chunk yet, and adding anything to it will not work. That is the whole diagnostic.

The cardinals are also a memory palace

The ebook names the method of loci outright, the technique where you place things you want to remember at points along a familiar route. It is what memory competitors use.

It is also unusually well evidenced. Dresler and colleagues published work in Neuron in 2017 showing that six weeks of method of loci training reshaped brain network activity in ordinary people toward the patterns seen in world memory championship competitors, and produced more durable memories. Six weeks. A spatial scheme is not a gimmick.

Which is worth sitting with, because the cardinal points are literally a spatial scheme. South, East, West, North are four locations, and you are filing a movement at each one. We did not design that as a mnemonic. It turns out to be one.

The mistake: do not chop the figure 8 up

This is the part I would have got wrong if I had only read the learning-science half.

The obvious move, once you believe in chunking, is to break every skill into smaller and smaller pieces and drill them separately. Motor learning research calls that part practice, as against whole practice, and it has been studied for decades, including in meta-analysis.

The finding is not "parts are better". It is more useful than that. Part practice helps when a task genuinely has separable components, because it lets you focus on the hard one. But whole practice has an advantage part practice destroys: the precise timing between components. Chop up a movement whose whole identity is its rhythm, and you have not simplified it, you have replaced it with a different task.

A figure 8 is exactly that kind of movement. There is no useful way to practise the first half of a figure 8. The rope does not stop mid-arc waiting for you.

So here is why I think the cardinal points work, stated plainly as my own reading rather than a finding: they chunk at the right grain. The whole pattern stays intact as one unit, and what varies is the context around it, which direction you are facing. We never go below the level of the movement. We vary above it.

That also means the system is doing two jobs at once, because varying the context is itself a well studied way to practise. More on that in the article on speed and precision, and it is why mixed practice feels worse and works better.

How to actually use this

  1. Build one chunk before you add anything. Overhand figure 8 on its own, until you stop thinking about it. Not until it is correct, until it is boring.
  2. Then add the second one. Underhand figure 8 on its own, same standard.
  3. Then link them with the propeller. The transition is a new chunk, not a shortcut between two old ones.
  4. Only then run the cardinals. Same pattern, four directions. This is where one movement becomes four, and where it starts feeling like a practice rather than a drill.
  5. Use the direction as the label. "Overhand, facing east" is a filing address. It is much easier to retrieve than a description of what your arms are doing.

What we are not claiming

Miller's chunking work and the method of loci research are about memory for information, mostly verbal and visual. Applying them to a movement pattern is a reasonable extension, and it is an extension. The whole-versus-part literature is motor-domain, and it is genuinely mixed rather than settled: which one wins depends on the task.

What I can tell you is that the cardinal points came out of teaching, not out of a paper, and that the research I have since read makes better sense of why they work than I could before.

Where to start
